How BTU Sizing Works
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit — it's the standard measurement of an HVAC system's heating or cooling capacity. One BTU is the energy needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.
The base calculation starts at 20 BTU per square foot, then adjusts for factors that increase or decrease your needs:
Room Size
Larger rooms need more BTUs. A 200 sq ft room needs about 4,000 base BTUs, while a 500 sq ft space needs 10,000+.
Ceiling Height
Taller ceilings mean more air volume to condition. Rooms over 8 feet need proportionally more capacity.
Insulation Quality
Poor insulation can increase BTU needs by 30%. Well-insulated spaces require less capacity to maintain temperature.
Windows
Each window adds ~1,000 BTUs of load. Single-pane windows add more; triple-pane adds less. South/west-facing windows add solar heat gain.
Occupants
Each person generates about 600 BTUs of body heat. High-occupancy spaces like kitchens and offices need more cooling.
Room Purpose
Kitchens generate heat from appliances (+20% BTU). Server rooms have significant heat loads (+50%). Basements and attics have unique insulation challenges.
Important: This calculator provides a strong estimate, but a professional load calculation accounts for additional factors like ductwork condition, local climate data, building orientation, and air infiltration.
